I cannot tell a lie. When my very good friend Austin started posting his new work on his tumblr Dark Days, Light Nights I was a bit apprehensive that he might just be drinking too much of that Koolaid now that he’s living out in L.A. (LA land of anything crazy+insane). A month or so later after seeing his first video posted I’m glad to see the result is a great body of experimental work. So maybe he is drinking the Koolaid, maybe he isn’t… After seeing these NUMERICS, I’m thinking Austin Saya is the guy making the Koolaid.
A few months ago I read an article on Monocle magazine about Istanbul. I was sending this once again to a friend, but thought why not just blog about it. What the hell, we could all use it. The article reads:
‘ There is a Turkish word that has no direct English translation, a word the English speakers would do well to adopt. In the same way we borrowed “joie de vivre” and “la dolce vita” from our continental cousins, keyifli has even more everyday import than its French and Italian equivalents.
Crudely put, it is the joy derived from small things in life.”Keyifli is this…”
……..So much of life in Istanbul is given to the pursuit of keyifli. A life lived on the streets; from rooftop to rooftop; afloat or by boat; in taxis and in traffic jams; at prayer or in sin or somewhere in between……..laying back at top speed; with bellies full and glasses empty;smoking, joking and forever in gesticulation’
Sometimes you have to sit back, take a breath and enjoy the little moments life quietly hands out. Like my friend said during a long overdue conversation last night, ‘that, is life… that is what it’s all about’.
